October is Nice, But Cybersecurity Awareness is a Year-Round Activity

It’s easy to find “October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month” tips to help teach employees about threats and scams and ways to avoid them. But let’s get real. If you’re not offering cybersecurity awareness and training all year long, you’re doing it wrong.

As early as May 2020, the FBI had already seen a 300% increase in reported cybercrimes related to the pandemic. Every day, cybercriminals continue to invent new and dangerous tactics to exploit the COVID-19 crisis, working from home, and business in general. They especially hope people can be tricked into revealing sensitive company, financial, patient or personal information. And they’re using every means possible to do it – email, text, internet, social media and phone.

It’s up to Information Security and communications professionals to build and sustain cybersecurity awareness and training for employees throughout the year. While it’s good to shine the spotlight on cybersecurity in October, it should be just one part of your organization’s efforts.

Protecting your business and all the data you manage takes the full force of your employees all working together. When you equip employees with useful information on a regular basis, they can adopt good behaviors and the ability to identify, avoid and report scams in their personal lives and on the job. With a cyber-safe mindset, they’ll even be able to prevent bad things from happening, and that’s the best defense you could possibly have.

Staying on top of the latest threats and delivering cybersecurity communications takes time, patience and effort. If you aren’t able to handle it all on your own, let us help!
